Getting to San Blas Islands

The fastest option for getting the San Blas Islands is by a 30-minute pre-booked flight from Panama City. Air Panama has flights departing from Panama City Albrook Airport (PAC) at 6.00am daily to both El Porvenir (PVE) and Corazon de Jesus (CZJ), both have daily return flights to Panama City. Flights are small and fill up quickly, so be sure to book ahead well in advance. Head to for more info. Traveling to San Blas by SUV via “Kuna Transporte” private transport is a 2.5 to 3 hour secenic HWY and mountain road journey across the isthumus of Panama mountain jungle to the Guna Yala Coast of Carti, then a 30 minute opean boat / “panga” ride to your San Blas departure island and waiting yacht. Getting to Panama City

By Air

International flights arrive at and depart from Tocumen International Airport (PTY), located 35km northeast of the city center. International airlines serving Panama City include: American Airlines, Continental Airlines, COPA, Delta, TACA Air, Aeromexico, United Airlines. You can make your way to your accommodation by taxi or bus, as both options will be available at the airport.

By bus

Depending on where you’re arriving from, there are various options for getting to Panama City by bus.

If you’re arriving from San Jose (Costa Rica), both Panaline and Tica Bus offer direct service from San Jose, which costs approximately $20.00-$23.00 each way. Buses normally depart daily and take about 14-15 hours to complete the trip. They are large, air conditioned and comfortable.

If you’re departing from David, you can get to Panama City with either Padafront or Panama-David bus lines. These buses, similar to Tica Bus and Panaline, are also large, comfortable and air conditioned, but are not direct unless you take the midnight bus. The bus ride takes about 7 hours and stops midway at Santiago for about 30 minutes where you can eat. The buses at either company depart nearly every hour, perhaps less if they fill up quickly. The ride costs approximately $11.00 and takes about 7 hours.

Getting to Bocas del Toro (Isla Colón).

If your Nirvana Charters trip begins in Bocas del Toro, the boat will be anchored just off the main island, Isla Colón, and you will be informed of the exact time and location closer to the departure date.

By plane

Air Panama provides at least 2 flights per day from Panama City to Isla Colón, Bocas del Toro (BOC), departing from Albrook Airport (PAC). It is a one-hour flight and one-way tickets can cost anywhere between $100-150. During certain times of the year, flights get completely booked, so make sure to book in advance. Once you arrive to Isla Colón, you’ll be able to take a short taxi ride to wherever you need to be, depending on travel arrangements you’ve made.

By car

If you’re driving, check to see the best route to get you to Almirante from the direction you’re coming from. Once you arrive in Almirante, you can choose to leave your vehicle in Almirante, or take it on the ferry across to Isla Colón, which departs Monday through Saturday, leaving Almirante at 8:00 am daily, costing $15 per vehicle with an additional fee per passenger. *Note: Taking your vehicle on the ferry is subject to availability of space.
